IUB Theatre staged their 16th production Rabindranath Tagore’s ”Daakgharat  Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on 27th January 2015. The club performed the play in front a full house audience some of them were guests but the majority paid to watch the play. On the occasion IUB Theatre’s club patron Dr. G.M. Shahidul Alam Head, Department of Media and Communication, IUB was present. The play was directed by Md. Rafiqul Islam. It was a very special play for IUB Theatre as they were performing a Rabindranath Togore’s drama and its first show was staged at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. The cast and the entire team were really excited as they could perform such a metaphoric play symbolizing a very deep meaning emphasizing the importance of freedom of the soul. The story of Daakghar talks around a boy named Amal (role played by Farjana Akter) who was adopted by Madhab Dutta (role played by Quazi Azib Mahmud Tonmoy). Amal was very ill. That is why Madhab Dutta with the advice of the Kabiraj (role played by Mamun Ur Rashid Arefin) keeps him confined to his room. As Amal was not allowed to go outside he makes friendship with people who pass by window. In conversation with all the passers- by Amal expresses his endless wish to be free and to .see the beautiful world. Amal from his curiosity wants to know about the world outside the house. He learns them about the post office of the king. He writes to the king and eagerly waits for his reply. Some of the passers- by give him hope that the king will reply while some say the king has no time to write to an ordinary boy like him. In between this Amal’s illness slowly grows. At one point Amal gets a letter reply from the king that he is coming to visit him and is also sending his royal kabiraj to treat him. As the royal Kabiraj (role played by  Md. Shaukat-Ul- Islam) arrives,  he finds out  that they mistreated him by keeping him in a room and the boy slowly  succumbs to his illness and dies.

After highly positive response to the play from the audience at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, IUB Theatre is now looking forward to staging this show in the campus and in different places out of the campus.

DEA-IUB Organizes winter cloth collection programme

At the end of January 2014 ‘The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at IUB – DEA IUB’ held a week long winter cloth collection program titled ‘A FRIEND IN NEED’ at the Independent University, Bangladesh with the aim to provide warm clothes to needy people. The club encouraged students of Independent University, Bangladesh to come forward and make contribution in terms of donation and warm clothes. The students were made aware of this program through banners and word of mouth. The collection program, even if it was of a short duration, resulted in a surprising volume of warm clothes and donation. After the end of the collection program, the club used the proceeds from donation to buy blankets which were to be distributed along with warm clothes. With around five hundred pieces of warm clothes and fifty five blankets the club started the distribution. The members of the club were divided into three teams, two of which targeted slums at Bashundhara Residential Area and Kuril 300 Feet Area respectively. The remaining team distributed at a village in Manikganj. Every member of the club worked with enthusiasm and the students were more than happy to make contribution and be a part of such humanitarian activity. Since Community Service is a part of the International Duke of Edinburgh’s Award itself, and DEA IUB being the only club facilitating the award at Independent University, Bangladesh, the club firmly wishes the continuation of such events in future as well. The club shares all their activities through the club’s fan page on Facebook.
